A quick lesson in glass display properties
Written by Edvard
Thursday, 10 June 2010 19:09

06-08-10iphoneglass So, I stumbled over a very fascinating discussion on the new iPhone 4’s glass construction. According to Apple the new iPhone is made of aluminosilicate glass. Apple says it's "chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic".

Now, you would think this simply means that its extremely durable and resistant to both drops, scratches and other kinds of wear and tear.

However, after talking with a chemical expert, it seems Apple is using extremely specific engineering terms. And they are actually effectively saying that this new super glass iPhone isn't at all resistant to shattering. For some reason these kinds of things fascinate the hell out of me and if you are even remotely puzzled, please do read on. You will definitely learn something new.

Have your say! Discuss the poll on the forums
Written by Edvard

polls-icon So, I remember someone suggesting the ability to discuss the polls that are up here on the site on the forums. I wanted to make a cooler system for it, but at least there is a dedicated forum section for it now where topics are created for every new poll out there.

There is also a sticky topic where you can make suggestions on what question should be featured on the next poll, so feel free to give it a shout.

Have fun!

Android 2.2 (Froyo) impressions
Written by Edvard

android_froyo I have been running a pre-rooted stock FR50 Android 2.2 ROM on my Nexus One for about a week now and even though none of the changes are really revolutionary it has definitely given Android a significant boost and I really feel like 2.2 makes Android complete.

This is by no means a full review and if you want to more details on what 2.2 brings with it, check out the Android 2.2 Highlights page. However, feel free to read on to know more about how I find the little green robot’s new tricks.

MarketAccess, a complete re-write of MarketEnabler
Written by Edvard

e8031dc2a2a737696aaf5f50c3446b15.media.240x400 For those of us living in countries that for some reason are not privileged to the paid apps on the Android Market, MarketEnabler has been of great help.

However, after upgrading to Android 2.2 (Froyo) then MarketEnabler has stopped working for me. The solution proved to be MarketAccess, a complete rewrite of MarketEnabler

This Android application emulates the SIM card of the chosen operator and makes paid apps accessible in the Android Market. You need it if you want to buy apps and games from Market, but Market is not (yet) available in your country or for your operator.

MarketAccess, as well as MarketEnabler requires root available on the device. It means than you need to unlock your phone and install the su application which will manage permissions for other apps that want to get root on the device. Google for details.

Android-x86 project lets you run Android on your computer
Written by Edvard

48099_enso-zenpad Android might be designed for mobile phones, but I can definitely see it being useful on a netbook as well for the times when you just want to surf the net and do other simple tasks.

I stumbled over a project working on running Android on x86 systems. I fired it up in vmware and it works quite well. The project aims more specifically up against the Asus Eee PC  but it runs well on other systems as well.

Interested? Check out the project website for details and downloads. Sadly, its still only supporting Android 1.6, but at least it works!
