Multitouch in X.org coming
Written by Edvard
Tuesday, 10 August 2010 07:12

Multi-touch, the technology that enables you to use several fingers on a touch sensitive surface, is about to be formalized in X.org. Peter Hutterer has presented the first draft of the protocol. That is the specifications that applications and hardware manufacturers must follow for the system to work.

Peter has previously written implementations shown on YouTube. Support for Multi-touch has been expected since 2008 but Peter is now working for Red Hat so hopefully the project will get more continuity and support from the hardware manufacturers.

Google Wave closing down
Written by Edvard
Friday, 06 August 2010 08:25

Google Wave is now considered a failed project and will shut down by the end of the year. Google has announced that they will no longer continue the development of Google Wave, at least not as a independant service. The reason being that Google Wave simply hasnt been as well received as they hoped for. Parts of Google Wave will be used and developed for other projects but the website wave.google.com will shut down by the end of 2010.

So what do you think? Why did Wave fail? Have your say!

ZFS, Ext4 and Btrfs compared
Written by Edvard
Monday, 02 August 2010 10:06

Phoronix has compared ZFS, UFS+J, UFS+S, Ext4 and btrfs. The first three were tested on FreeBSD 8.1, the latter two on Ubuntu 10.10 (which is still under development). The conclusion is that Ext4 and btrfs comes out on top and beats ZFS on most areas except so-called "random writes" when the amount of threads is less than 16. That said, ZFS has some features that Ext4 and btrfs doesnt.

It would have been interesting to see how NTFS fared in the comparison, though for now it seems that Microsoft haven't made any significant progress on WinFS.

Ps, btrfs is pronounced "butter eff ess"

Check out the full test here

The Connect-UTB IRC Channel
Written by Edvard
Monday, 02 August 2010 08:40

Thanks to TheDeadCPU's initative, we now have a IRC channel for Connect-UTB. I have signed on with my Nexus and will probably stay on 24/7. Please feel free to join us at #Connect-UTB at freenode.net.

IRC: irc.freenode.net

Channel: #Connect-UTB

There is still some work to do to make it a real nice and fun channel, but at least we have a place to meet! If anyone have some knowledge or experience with running an IRC server and know some fun features that would be nice to have, please do shout out!

For those of you who does not have an IRC client you can either download one or use the freenode browser client. Let's see how many people we can gather!

See you there!

OpenSUSE 11.3 launched
Written by Edvard
Monday, 19 July 2010 15:17

opensuse OpenSuse 11.3 is now available. It runs the 2.6.34 kernel, Gcc 4.5, Gnome 2.30 and KDE SC 4.4.4. With the release of the new version, support for version 11.0 is now gone though, so those lagging behind should consider upgrading.

Personally, I OpenSUSE was my Linux distro of choice for ages and I loved it. However, I have never tried it running Gnome which is what I will be trying now.

Please do share your experiences with all of us though should you decide to give it ago!
