Adobe Photoshop CS2 is now free!

No strings attached… maybe

Adobe Photoshop CS2 is now free!

This came out of nowhere, but Adobe has gone ahead and released Photoshop CS2 for free. At least seemingly without strings attached. This is great news, as CS2 should be more than most of us will ever need! While GIMP and others are great alternatives, a lot of us are simply too familiar with Photoshop to be willing to make the swap. To grab your free copy of CS2, simply go to the download page and take note of the required product key. If you give it a go, please drop a comment on how it worked!

UPDATE: Apparently, its not for free after all. Adobe clarifies:

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated …

You have heard wrong! Adobe is absolutely not providing free copies of CS2!

What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2 and that for existing licensed users of CS2 who need to reinstall their software, copies of CS2 that don’t require activation but do require valid serial numbers are available. (Special serial numbers are provided on the page for each product download.) - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1114930.

Now I don’t have an excuse for not developing my skills

Haha, yep, exactly! Better get to it! In all seriousness though, there are some really awesome tutorials out there for free.

Since they’ve clarified, the download page still seems to be active and the product keys are still listed. There doesn’t really seem to be anything to prevent anybody from downloading and installing for free with no consequences. Other than blow a chance at getting some amazing PR for something that isn’t actually going to cost them any money, they should have just ran with it. It’s not like people are still pirating CS2.

Yea! Apparently its just technically illegal if you use it without being an existing customer. But as you said, there is nothing stopping you from doing so, and there’s no way to tell existing customers from those who are not. Weird. But yeah, as you say, they should have just gone with it and gotten some positive PR.
