iftop – The geeky way to monitor network bandwidth
Answers the question: Why is my internet so slow?
Many of you are probably familiar with the top command which gives you a great overview of the CPU usage. However, there is a similar tool that does for your bandwidth what top does for the CPU. Its called iftop and its quite nifty! It listens to network traffic on a named interface and displays a table of current bandwidth usage by pairs of hosts. Handy for answering the question “why is our internet link so slow?”. Worth checking out. apt-get install iftop (on Ubuntu distro’s).
